Automotive Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) and IEEE 1609.2 Certificates

Connected vehicles participate in complex trust relationships: exchanging safety messages with smart traffic lights (V2X), authenticating with fast-charging stations (ISO 15118 Plug & Charge), and receiving cloud software updates. Managing cryptographic identities across tens of millions of vehicles requires automated certificate enrollment protocols (EST/CMP) and privacy-preserving pseudonym certificates.

Privacy-Preserving Pseudonym Certificates in Cooperative V2X

If a vehicle continuously broadcasted Basic Safety Messages (BSMs) signed with a single permanent public key, any adversary with an antenna beside a road could record the unique signature and track the driver's daily commute from home to office. The IEEE 1609.2 standard implements Pseudonym Certificate Authorities (PCA): the vehicle pre-downloads pools of 500 pseudonym certificates. The vehicle rotates its signing key every 15 minutes, ensuring communication is authentic yet completely untraceable.
