TPM 2.0 Remote Attestation for Automotive Edge: Verifying Boot Integrity Before Ignition

In high-consequence connected vehicles like autonomous robo-taxis and commercial electric trucks, verifying software integrity purely on local processors is an incomplete defense. A sophisticated physical attacker can alter peripheral buses or flash alternative kernels that trick local display screens. TPM 2.0 Remote Attestation requires the vehicle to mathematically prove its software state to an independent remote verifier before high-voltage relays close.

The Challenge-Response Nonce Handshake Protocol

To prevent replay attacks where an attacker captures a valid signed Quote from yesterday and plays it back to spoof a clean boot, the cloud verifier generates a cryptographically secure 256-bit random number (Nonce) and transmits it in an attestation challenge. The vehicle passes the Nonce into the TPM 2.0 command `TPM2_Quote()`. The TPM digests the current PCR banks and the Nonce together under the Attestation Identity Key. The cloud matches the returned signature and fresh Nonce, definitively certifying the vehicle's live health.
